With all the rain and the busyness of life, I have severely neglected my garden this summer. As a result, it has been overcome with weeds. So much so, that I just figured it was over for this season. As we all know, weeds will choke the life out of anything. Including us! Weeds will grow when and where nothing else will. When I started my garden, I had a raised bed built. I filled it with good soil. I fertilized it and over the years I’ve had great harvests. But I believe that also over the years, as the lawn was mowed surrounding the garden, that grass and weeds got thrown into the garden bed from the mower. And so….I have weeds…lots of them!. :-( This morning I was determined to put some work in and clear the weeds. Now you have to be careful with pulling weeds, because the weeds intertwine themselves with the plants and if you’re not careful, in pulling up the weeds, you will also pull up good plants. It’s a very tedious task. But to my surprise, I found that even with all the weeds, there was a great harvest! These strongly rooted, determined plants had survived the weeds! I had a bounty of collard greens, tomatoes, peppers and okra!
How often does our life get so weeded that we feel the weeds will choke the life out of us? How often do we let strongholds of fear and anxiety choke out our ability to live out the fullness of our God-given potential. Be strong! Don’t give up! There is still a great harvest to be had. You too can survive the weeds!
