Breaking the Fast

Breakfast. “The first meal of the day, usually eaten in the morning. Middle English brekfast, from the phrase breken fast "to break one's fast, end abstinence from food".

It’s the last Sunday of the first month of the year. Many of us are about to have breakfast or brunch and will be celebrating the end of some type of fast. January is a time for reflection, for resetting, for giving thought to how we move forward. Whether you’ve participated in the Daniel Fast, Dry January, New Year Resolutions or some other type of personal meditation and reflection, it is always good to take time to reflect and go deep into the presence of the One higher than ourselves.

For me (and many others) January meant moving into a year with a new familial paradigm. For the first year, we are living without parents, friends or family members lost to the previous year. For the past year, the voices in my head and in my heart went silent as I lost the motivation and the spirit of writing. But January is also a time of new hope. Just as the garden has been put to bed for the winter, at the end of January, we start to clean out the dead stuff and prepare the beds for the next season. We prepare with great expectation looking forward to a new season of growth and harvest. I am thankful to my new friend Ammi Bejar who in just mentioning this blog inspired me to clear out the dead stuff in my head and prepare for the next season.

So if you too have had a season of lost, I pray for your continued healing and comfort. And if you are breaking a fast today, I say Halleluljah, we made it! Let’s look to God with hope and great expectation for the new season and harvest that He has in store for us. Hallelujah!

Happy Sunday Saints!
