So on yesterday I called it quits on the spring garden and was pulling out everything to prepare for the fall. Initially, all I saw was sun burned vegetables and dead vines. It all needed to just be pulled out. But as I pulled out and bagged up the weeds and dead vines to be thrown away, there I saw it. A remnant. One lone tomato plant, seemingly burned up but full of tomatoes hanging on for dear life. I stood in amazement that through the 100 degrees, birds, squirrels and worms, this lone plant had survived. A remnant. Throughout the bible, there is mention of a remnant. In 2 Kings 19:30 and Isaiah 37:31, the bible tells us that “the surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward”. So when I found this plant, I trimmed off the dead limbs, gave it’s roots some fertilizer and a good watering with hopes that it will continue to survive, will take root downward and bear fruit upward.
We are in times where we are being beat down by the heat of the sun, we are being attacked by a pandemic and crushed under the harsh hand of racism across our land. Will you be a remnant? Will you be careful not to get lost in the rhetoric not be afraid to stand out for what is right? Be your own voice. Though your vines may be weathered, take heart. Feed your mind and your soul with wisdom. Allow your roots to go downward so that you may stand strong and come out bearing good fruit.
Be encouraged family! There is always a remnant.
Happy Sunday!
