I Am My Father's Garden

These are the voices and teachings of my garden. The garden speaks to me, teaches me and disciplines me. For me, it is the Creator speaking through His creation.

Lessons from The Daniel Fast

As we neared the end of our 21-day Daniel Fast, my husband and I fantasized about all the “choice foods” we would eat. We talked about hamburgers, ribs, steak, fried chicken, cake and pie. We searched Open Table for the perfect restaurant to go and break the fast. But when today actually came, we found that we really didn’t want it. All I wanted was a good latte and some shrimp and grits and all he wanted was a pancake. We found that we couldn’t even eat the whole meal. So we stopped before we got overly full and called it a day. It brought to mind something a wise friend told me years ago when we were doing the Daniel Fast. She said, “Karen, the Daniel Fast should change you. You shouldn’t just pick back up where you left off.” I did try to eat one rib today and it made me sick. So, we skipped the fancy restaurant with all the delicacies that we dreamed of. I went out to the garden and picked some collard greens, cleaned out the fridge and filled it with fish, fruit and vegetables. Clean eating is a lifestyle!

Since it wasn’t really about the food at all, the greatest accomplishment I found this time around was “making” the time for prayer, reflection and study. Instead of rushing out of the house to work, I set the clock a little earlier, got up in the dark, sat at my table and spent time in His presence. It is important that we “make” time for those things that are important. Those things that yield long term and even eternal benefit.

If you participated in the Daniel Fast this year, I pray your experience was enlightening, heart warming and most importantly, life changing for His Glory.

Happy Sunday Saints!
