I Am My Father's Garden

These are the voices and teachings of my garden. The garden speaks to me, teaches me and disciplines me. For me, it is the Creator speaking through His creation.

Distraction and Neglect

IMG_0119.JPG

I’ve been distracted and as a result, the things I care about the most have been neglected. After fear, distraction is the enemy’s most powerful tool. If we can be distracted from what is important, then destruction will take care of itself. And the greatest of the enemy’s tools of distraction is “busyness”. We get so “busy” putting all of our energy into the things that we “think” must be done right now and neglect those things that bring us long lasting value. I’ve been busy. I’ve been distracted. And I’ve neglected those things that are really most important to me. I’ve not been on my bike in weeks. My nails look a HOTT mess! Self care has been tossed aside. I’ve not spent quality time with some of my closest friends in a good long while. And sadly, my garden is in disrepair. While I’ve been so “busy” and distracted, the caterpillars, aphids, leaf miners and bag bugs have destroyed the squash. The grass and weeds and have taken over the greens. It is all in disarray. You often don’t see this happening. While we are so busy being busy, these weapons of destruction, do their damage from the inside out. At a quick glance, it looks like things are fine, but with a closer look, you see that your bell peppers, for instance, have been destroyed from the inside out. This is how the enemy works. While we are consumed with things that don’t matter, he quietly destroys what does matter from the inside out.

But God is the God of not just a second chance, but another chance and another and another. So I will quieten myself down, spend some time pulling out and replanting, weeding out the distractors, and get the important things back on track.
